Union Power Partners with Community Allies for a Big Win on Parking Rates

Our Local 1000 Purpose Statement encourages and empowers us to seek alliances and to work to make a difference in the communities where we live and work.

Recently, our represented employees in Riverside, east of Los Angeles, did just that when they came together with other groups and supporters in the community to fight against high parking rates.

As DLC 703 Jayson Sandoval recently reported to his fellow activists, “YOU did it! Because of your courage, passion, activism, and determination, the City of Riverside has rolled back its parking rate increase!”

The change came from a packed City Council chamber and included testimony from DLC 703 Vice President/Chief Steward Bill Suhar (DGS), local bar/restaurant workers and business owners. Local 1000 VP/Secretary-Treasurer David Jimenez was also on hand throughout the night.

With a 4-2 vote, the City Council decreed that parking will be free again after 5:00 p.m. and on weekends. Parking rates at street meters and garages are rolled back to the previous rates (prior to July 1, 2022). People who purchased a parking pass after July 1 will be refunded. And, the City of Riverside has committed for the next 7 months to work with us to find a better parking solution.

This is a win for the entire community, and illustrates once again that we are “Stronger Together.”
