Members of Bargaining Unit 3 as well as Bargaining Unit 20 met with the California Department of Education on March 18th, 2025, regarding the proposed Academic Calendar for 2025-2026.
We went into the meeting with the strategy of bringing up the ongoing issues surrounding the Academic Calendar and work schedules, specifically for the 10-month employees at Fremont School for the Deaf. We expressed our ongoing frustration regarding Fremont 10-month employees not being scheduled their hours as Riverside School for the Deaf employees do. We emphasized that these are similarly situated employees who deserve the same fair treatment. The state failed to give us a reasonable response as to why one school provides those scheduled hours, and the other school does not.
Additionally, we discussed the petition that was signed by employees across multiple units, including Unit 4, Unit 15, Unit 17, and Unit 20 which includes Office Technicians, Cafeteria Workers, Nurses, Teacher Assistants, and Counselors, all of whom are advocating for the option of a consistent 40-hour workweek during academic calendar weeks without the need to use leave credits to cover shortfalls.
The State reluctantly agreed to elevate our concerns about establishing a staff calendar in Fremont, but without the pressure at the worksite – our efforts can be easily dismissed.
We encourage employees to get in contact with your respectful stewards about joining our efforts to ensure that the 10-month employees have the security and the stability they deserve.
