On November 20th, your union met with the Department of Motor Vehicles’ top level management team, to address various issues regarding our working conditions.

Vacation Bidding

There is confusion regarding vacation bids when it comes to hours available, as some managers have implied that you are not able to include projected leave balances credits when biding on your vacation. If your requested vacation is denied for the reason of insufficient leave balance at the time of request, get the denial in writing and contact the Member Resource Center (MRC).

“We worked hard to ensure that projected leave balances are calculated and honored when requesting vacation.  It is very important to be familiar with your contract.” ~ Tom Krieger, DMV

Know your rights!

Projected leave balances can be used when requesting your annual vacation request, with the stipulation that you have efficient leave credit available at the time of your vacation.

Article 8.1: Vacation Accrual
Full-time employees shall be allowed credit for vacation with pay on the first day of the following month as follows:

7 months to 3 years 7 hours per month
37 months to 10 years 10 hours per month
121 months to 15 years 12 hours per month
181 months to 20 years 13 hours per month
241 months and over 14 hours per month

Employees may elect to enroll in the Annual Leave Program to receive annual leave credit in lieu of vacation and sick leave credits.

Article 18: Permanent Intermittents (PI) for information on how service credit, vacation, and holiday hours are calculated for PIs.

Escalation of Perceived Threat

Change can cause fear, anger, confusion, or uncertainty for all of us, including management and the public we serve. If you are subjected to a situation you perceive to be a threat report immediately to the closest available manager. They are responsible for following protocol, assessing, protecting, contacting local law enforcement if warranted, and filing an incident report. Be sure to document all details of what happened, when, where, who was involved, witnesses and any other detail to articulate the situation. All situations may not warrant the above. If the response from management deemed inappropriate or insufficient contact the MRC.

Email Notification

DMV is now using email to communicate critical issues related to updated procedures, policies, memos, accounts receivable (AR), scheduling, benefits, and countless other notices. If you are not able to keep up with your inbox between customers, let management know you need some dedicated time to do so.

Virtual Training

Management feels virtual training is sufficient and the Learning and Development Branch (LDB) has moved to a virtual only training format. They have no record of new hires not passing probation due to this change. Speak up! Let management know if you are not getting the training and tools to be able to perform your duties efficiently. If you are not being heard by management, contact the MRC.

“It is important to document situations needing improvement and to report violations of our contract to the Member Resource Center. This information is imperative to strengthen our voice and enact change. If it isn’t in writing, it doesn’t exist!”  ~Tammy Rodriguez, DMV

Our next JLMC is scheduled for March 2025.
